Summer Sketches

Writing has taken a back-burner to art for the past few weeks. I'm still working on my rewrite, but I admit I'm having a hard time... I don't feel very productive when I write little over a page in four hours. (What am I doing with all that time...?) So, I go through phases of creativity, and art took over last month. I hereby present samples from that shift, Summer Sketches!

Oh, and some finished minis from SDE.

  1. Fun sketches! I love how clean they all look. (Mine tend to be incredibly messy, which makes them all the more challenging to ink and color.) I love the slip of a fang in the second one, but the mermaid piece is easily my favorite! :)

Also, I totally know what you mean when it comes to Drawing vs. Writing. I've been far more compelled to work on art the past few months, too. It takes months, if not years, to finish a book, but a piece of art can be completed in as little as a day if you want, and I guess that sense of productivity is what draws me to it over writing....

    1. Thank you very much! Lately I've been obsessed with mermaids, as a kind of siren--you know, the ones who will "sweetly drown you" if you get too close.

Writing takes me a long time. I love it, and I feel like I'm good at it, but then I see people who are like "I wrote 8,000 words today" and I'm like, "I spent four hours on mine and came up with 1,700."

I can see where you're coming from. For the most part, my sketches take ~30-45 minutes, and I "listen" to TV as I draw. Painting takes more focus, especially those little ones (and I HAVE to have music going on in the background). It does feel very productive to see a complete drawing in that little time, especially compared to writing. :)

    2. Sirens are awesome! I always love seeing the darker side of mermaids. :P

I'm a slow writer, too. It always mind-boggles me to see someone who has written so much in such a short amount of time. Sometimes it takes me a whole day just to write a couple hundred words, if that....

At least we can be speedy artists. XD

  2. Oh Rachel, I love how that last mini turned out. It looks amazing!

And I think it's kind of the same for everyone. We all have times where we're feeling really creative in one aspect, and we spend a lot of time on that. Then, later, we'll lose the steam on that project and suddenly have an urge to focus our attention somewhere else. I think just as long as your being productive in something, it's just fine. :)

    1. Yeah, I posted about that earlier. I like that I can just switch projects and not get bored. Creativity is a flowing thing.

  4. I have to jump around on my creative projects too, if I work on one for too long I get bored or burned out.

The miniatures are turning out great! I really like the first sketch, I do that all the time when I'm listening to music. And I love how you draw mermaids :)

    1. Thanks so much, Barbara! I remember you bought the mermaid at CONduit. :) I'm glad I have such supportive friends.

There's one more mermaid drawing in the works, I just have to darken it and put in the background.
